- Effectively controls hydrocarbon contamination
description and use
Spectrus BD1501E is a blend of non-ionic surfactants specifically designed to assist in the control of biofilms and hydrocarbon contamination in open evaporative and once through cooling systems.
Hydrocarbon ingress into cooling systems, through leaks, can foul heat exchange equipment leading to loss of heat transfer and reduced efficiency and productivity.
Hydrocarbon, oil or grease contamination in cooling waters provides additional nutrients for microbial populations. In addition to increasing the rate of metabolism of the microbial populations, hydrocarbon deposits on equipment surfaces also provide a substrate and nutrient source for biofilm formation.
Biofilms can subsequently result in further fouling of equipment, under deposit and/or microbiologically induce corrosion of metals within the system.
Since the hydrocarbon contamination and biofilm formation are often related, Spectrus BD1501E was developed in order to address both of these potential problems. Surfactants that exhibit superior properties for control of hydrocarbon fouling have been blended with surfactants that will “wet” biofilms improving the penetration of biocides into the biofilm.
By penetrating into the biofilm, more effective control of biofilm growth and removal of biofilms is achieved. This is particularly important in the case of halogens, which have relatively poor penetration properties with respect to dense biofilms.
typical applications
Spectrus BD1501E may be used continuously, as part of the chemical treatment programme, to provide continual protection against small, possibly initially undetectable hydrocarbon leaks. Used continuously it will also be present in the system to enhance continuous or intermittent biocide programmes. Alternatively, Spectrus BD1501E can be used on an intermittent basis, being shot dosed when a leak is detected or suspected, or, as a biocide enhancer, prior to the injection of biocide.
treatment and feeding requirements
Proper treatment levels of Spectrus BD1501E depend on many factors, such as microbiological populations, nutrient concentration, and conditions particular to a given installation. The product should be used in accordance with control procedures that VEOLIA establishes for a specific application.
The product may be fed directly from the shipping container or storage tank to a point in the cooling system where it will be rapidly mixed with the bulk cooling water.
Equipment recommendations for specific blends are available upon request.
For consistent protection, continuous feed is recommended.
