oxygen scavenger and all-polymer internal treatment

  • Includes oxygen scavenger for pre-boiler oxygen corrosion control.
  • Patented Boiler Terpolymer (BTP) provides efficient dispersion of hardness and iron
  • Helps maintain clean heat transfer surfaces
  • Easy to handle liquid formulation
  • All the ingredients in Solus MCA42 are approved for FDA 21CFR173.310 – boiler water additives for use in the preparation of steam that will contact food, up to a maximum level of 4167 ppm Solus MCA42 in the boiler water. Solus MCA42 is also approved as NSF- USDA G6.

description and use

Solus MCA42 includes sodium sulphite, the patented Boiler Terpolymer (BTP) and neutralising amine. Solus MCA42 is formulated to be used in systems having a thermal deaerator or where the boiler feedwater temperature is at least 90°C.

The VEOLIA patented dispersant is a terpolymer which is stable and effective over a wide range of boiler system pressures, and is one of the most advanced boiler water hardness and iron oxide dispersant on the market today.

typical applications

Oxygen corrosion “pitting” is commonly encountered in the hot well, feedwater lines, economisers and condensate system. Oxygen pitting can lead to equipment failure and leakage in a relatively short period of time.

In an All Polymer internal boiler treatment program, deposition is controlled by several interactive mechanisms: complexation, crystal modification, and dispersion.

The first mechanism is complexation or solubilisation of feedwater contaminants preventing their deposition.

The second is crystal modification. The polymer interferes with the crystal growth of hardness and metallic oxide compounds. The charged functional groups of the polymer absorb onto the surface of the crystal nuclei, inhibiting the rate of crystal growth.

The final mechanism is dispersion. As the polymer adsorbs onto particles and boiler surfaces, it imparts a negative charge to both. The high concentration of similar charge on particles and boiler surfaces causes particles to repel each other and repulse them from boiler surfaces.

Boiler feedwater contaminants which have been solubilised and dispersed are then removed from the boiler through the boiler continuous and bottom blowdowns.

Overall, this results in significantly reduced scaling potential and cleaner heat transfer surfaces, especially during upsets in feedwater hardness levels.

To reduce the risk of acid corrosion due to carbonic acid in the condensate system, neutralising amine is used. The neutralising amine initially neutralise the carbonic acid and then elevates the pH to reduce corrosion and the level of iron being returned to the boiler. Solus MCA42 contains neutralising amine to achieve this goal. System should be evaluated for supplemental feed if target control values are not achieved.

treatment and feeding requirements

Feedpoint – Solus MCA42 can be fed to the hot well, thermal deaerator storage section or suction side of the boiler feedwater pump.

Feedrate – The initial feed rate calculations for Solus MCA42 are based on the level of dissolved oxygen or total hardness and iron in the boiler feedwater. Feed rate control is achieved by measuring the boiler water sulphite residual, molybdate level and condensate pH and iron levels.

Dilution – Solus MCA42 can be fed neat or diluted to any convenient strength with good quality make-up water or condensate.

storage

Maintain storage temperature of minimum 10°C to minimize risk for sulphite crystallisation. Avoid direct exposure to sunlight and store in a shaded area at a maximum of 38°C. Reduce exposure to atmospheric oxygen.

Consideration should be given to installing flush/dilution water lines to day tanks and feed systems for removal of sulphite crystals that may develop with time.
